Seminar “Modern linguistics – Theory and Practice”
On March 20th , 2018, Department for Management of Science and Technology Development (DEMASTED) of Ton Duc Thang University (TDTU) organized the seminar entitled "Modern linguistics – Theory and Practice" by Dr. Phan Thi Huyen Tran (TDTU's researcher) and Assoc.Prof. Dinh Dien (Lecturer of Faculty of Information Technology, University of Science, Vietnam National University Ho Chi Minh City).
Attending the seminar, there were Dr. Pham Thanh Phong, Acting Director of Advanced Institute of Materials Science; Ms. Bui Thi Phuong Lien, Director of Creative Language Center; Assoc.Prof. Nguyen Van Hue, Director of Center of Vietnamese Studies and Vietnamese language; Dr. Dinh Truong Sinh, Vice Dean of Faculty of Foreign Language; lecturers and researchers of TDTU.
In the seminar, Dr. Phan Thi Huyen Tran presented the concept of Generative Grammar (GG) including (i) main ideas and GG sources, (ii) method of working as a scientific theory built on conventions of natural sciences (to distinguish from those of social sciences and humanities). Consequently, a specific phenomenon in Vietnamese is analyzed.
Moreover, Assoc.Prof. Dinh Dien presented an introduction on Computational Linguistics – an interdisciplinary field of Linguistics and Computation; Vietnamese Computational Linguistics and its application in education, e.g. teaching foreign languages to Vietnamese, teaching Vietnamese to foreigners, designing curricula, compiling dictionary, assessing linguistic competence, and checking plagiarism.
The talk of Dr. Phan Thi Huyen Tran and Assoc.Prof. Dinh Dien had ended successfully, and it promised to open up many collaborative research directions lecturers and researchers of TDTU.
